Do you have adrenal fatigue?

Watch out for the signs

The two walnut-sized adrenal glands that sit at the top of our kidneys do a vital job – they release hormones in response to stress.

In our busy lives, stress can be prolonged, and this can lead to adrenal fatigue.

Naturopathic practitioner Wendy Richards says there are many signs to watch for that indicate we have an adrenal gland imbalance, such as low energy and fatigue, even after a full night of sleep.

Others include higher energy in the evenings, insomnia, lowered immunity, inability to relax, weight gain around the middle, and anxiety or depression.

Richards' top tips

1. Eat nourishing foods such as fresh vegetables, proteins, nuts, seeds, small amounts of fruit, whole grains (brown rice, oats, quinoa) and filtered water.

2. Avoid stimulants such as alcohol, caffeine, smoking, drugs, chocolate and sugar.

3. Establish good sleeping patterns, with bedtime before 10.30pm.

4. Relax with meditation, deep breathing, holidays and massages.

5. Let go of ‘should do’ thoughts, give yourself permission to rest and relax, and focus on the present.
